TIRUPATI: Markapuram police have arrested a man for allegedly murdering his wife at Sarvereddypalli village in Komarole mandal. The arrest was made within 48 hours of the incident.

The accused, P. David, 40, a native of ABM Palem in Giddalur mandal and a resident of Sarvereddypalli, was arrested on Friday near an HP petrol bunk after the Taticherla Motu junction check-post in Komarole mandal.

The victim, Maria Jyothi, 32, was his wife. The couple had been married for about 17 years and had two children.

According to police, David worked as a painter and had allegedly been harassing his wife after developing an addiction to alcohol. Unable to bear the harassment, Maria Jyothi had moved with her children to her parents’ home in Sarvereddypalli about three years ago.

Police said David continued to visit the village and frequently quarrelled with her. On June 10, he allegedly arrived at the village carrying an axe and attacked her at around 5.30 am. She sustained severe injuries and died.

Acting on the directions of Superintendent of Police V. Harshavardhan Raju and under the supervision of DSP U. Nagaraju, a police team led by Giddalur Rural Circle Inspector J. Ramakotaiah and Komarole Sub-Inspector J. Nagaraju investigated the case using technical evidence and other leads.

The accused was traced and arrested on Friday. The case is under investigation.
