Andhra Pradesh: Dating App Match Turns Bitter, Man Alleges ₹3 Crore Demand

NELLORE: A dating-app acquaintance blossomed into a marriage proposal. But matters slid, leading to a criminal case and alleged demand that ₹3 crore be paid for withdrawal of the complaint.
According to a complaint lodged with Tirupati East police, Vamsi is a resident of Postal Colony in Tirupati working as a scientist at a hospital in Chennai.
He became acquainted with Namrata, a resident of Vanasthalipuram in Hyderabad through a dating app. Namrata is reportedly working as a deputy manager with an insurance company.
The acquaintance developed into a relationship. With the consent of both families, Vamsi and Namrata got engaged about a year ago. Since then, Vamsi alleges in his complaint, Namrata began pressuring him to send her money and transfer property in her name before the marriage.
Worried what the situation might be after marriage, Vamsi said the two families decided to call off the engagement.
Matters turned worse when Namrata registered a cheating case against Vamsi with the Vanasthalipuram police in 2025 (Crime No. 984/2025) and issued notices to him in connection with the case.
Vamsi has accused Namrata of sending him threatening emails over the past one month. He claims she is demanding ₹3 crore from him for withdrawing the case against him.
Vamsi has gone on to allege that Namrata is threatening to kill him and his family if the money is not paid.
Following this, Vamsi has approached Tirupati East police and submitted to police the threatening emails, besides lodging a complaint. Tirupati police have registered a case against Namrata and have launched an investigation into the allegations, including the extortion demand.
