Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh is set for a challenging start to the southwest monsoon season, as weather forecasts predict above-normal heatwave days and higher-than-usual maximum temperatures for June 2026.
The seasonal outlook indicates that rainfall across the state and much of South Peninsular India will remain below normal, with projections set at less than 94 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).
Despite the overall deficit, rainfall distribution is expected to vary across different districts, IMD said on Friday.
Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR), Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, Krishna and Kakinada districts are likely to receive normal rainfall.
In contrast, Polavaram, Eluru and West Godavari may experience deficits, while Bapatla, Guntur, Palnadu, and Prakasam could see above-normal showers. In Rayalaseema, parts of Annamayya and Anantapur are expected to receive normal rainfall, while the rest of the region may face shortfalls.
Experts at the Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam have noted that rainfall could vary by about four per cent, with nearly 60 per cent of the state expected to receive normal rainfall and 40 per cent facing deficits.
Meanwhile, the state disaster management authority has warned of diverse weather conditions in the immediate term, ranging from intense heat to rain and lightning. The authority’s managing director Prakhar Jain stated that temperatures are likely to ease slightly starting Sunday, but severe heatwaves are expected to affect 11 mandals on Saturday, with lesser intensity in 64 mandals.
Maximum temperatures may reach 45°C to 46°C in Polavaram, Kakinada, Eluru and Krishna districts, while parts of Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Anakapalli, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Markapuram, and Prakasam could see temperatures between 43°C and 44°C.
Other districts, including Srikakulam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Visakhapatnam, Nellore, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Chittoor and Tirupati, may record temperatures between 40°C and 42°C.
A surface circulation over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Tamil Nadu coast is expected to bring light to moderate rains with lightning to Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, and Chittoor districts over the weekend, with scattered showers possible in other areas.
On Friday, extreme temperatures were reported across the state: 45°C in Kommipadu (Nellore), 44.6°C in Devarapalli (Anakapalli), 43.9°C in Bamini (Manyam) and Rajam (Vizianagaram), 43.8°C in Karedu (Prakasam) and Venkatagiri (Tirupati), 43°C in Lakshminarasupeta (Srikakulam), 42.1°C in Kuchinapudi (Bapatla) and Devipatnam (Polavaram), and 42°C in Kukunoor (Eluru).
Temperatures above 42°C were recorded in 51 mandals across 10 districts, highlighting the severity of the heatwave gripping Andhra Pradesh.
