 Nellore: Six persons, including five medical students, died and one person sustained severe injuries in a car crash near Pothireddypalem, close to the Nellore–Mumbai National Highway, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as N. Venkata Ramanaiah, 65, a local resident, and second-year MBBS students of Narayana Medical College: Gurram Yagnesh of Ongole, L. Naresh Naik of Dharmavaram (Anantapur district), K. Abhishek Raj of Anantapur, G. Abhishai Purushottam of Tirupati, and Gundla Jeevan Chandra Reddy of Siddipuram in Sangam mandal.

The incident occurred when the students were rushing back to the college after attending the engagement ceremony of a classmate's sister in Buchireddypalem. The car, reportedly being driven at high speed by Navneeth, lost control after hitting a roadside mound and rammed into a shop attached to a house. The impact was so severe that police had to struggle to retrieve the bodies from the mangled vehicle. Earlier in the day, the group had attended classes until 10:30 a.m. before leaving for the function in a car owned by one of the victims, Jeevan Chandra Reddy.
