Nellore: Leaders and officials across Nellore and Prakasam districts paid rich tributes to freedom fighter and former chief minister Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu on his 69th death anniversary on Wednesday, recalling his honesty, sacrifices and contribution to the formation and development of Andhra Pradesh.
In Ongole, social welfare minister Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, along with public representatives and officials, paid floral tributes to Prakasam Pantulu’s statue at the Collectorate. The minister said the younger generation should draw inspiration from the freedom fighter’s sacrifices and fighting spirit and actively contribute to the State’s development.
He recalled that Prakasam Pantulu, who was born in Vinodarayunipalem in present-day Prakasam district, became a legendary figure after fearlessly facing British guns during the anti-Simon Commission protests in Madras.
At Madras Bus Stand in Nellore, State Brahmin Corporation director Ucchi Bhuvaneswari Prasad and others garlanded Prakasam Pantulu’s statue and hailed him as a symbol of integrity and fearless leadership.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhuvaneswari Prasad said Prakasam Pantulu gave up a lucrative legal career to join the freedom struggle and earned the title “Andhra Kesari” after boldly opposing the Simon Commission. He also highlighted Prakasam Pantulu’s role in establishing Sri Venkateswara University and safeguarding Tirumala as part of Andhra Pradesh during the State reorganisation debates.
Recalling his simplicity and honesty, speakers said Prakasam Pantulu, despite serving as chief minister, struggled to meet even his medical expenses in his final days, reflecting his incorruptible public life.
Several public representatives, officials and citizens participated in the commemorative events held in both districts.
