Municipal Administration and Urban Development minister P. Narayana— DC File

VIJAYAWADA: Amaravati is being developed as one of the safest cities, with a scientifically designed flood-management system that will prevent waterlogging once the ongoing works are completed, Municipal Administration and Urban Development minister P. Narayana said on Friday.

The minister laid the foundation stone for development works worth ₹32.10 crore in Ponnur Municipality, along with local MLA Dhulipalla Narendra. He paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the Gandhi Jayanti and planted saplings.

Narayana said the flood-control system for the capital has been designed with the assistance of experts from The Netherlands after studying rainfall patterns of Amaravati for past 200 years. The system is being developed to comprehensively manage floodwater and ensure quick drainage during heavy rains.

The minister said three major channels — Kondaveeti Vagu, Palavagu, and the Gravity Canal — are being developed in Amaravati. A pumping system capable of evacuating 22,500 cusecs of water had also been put in place to rapidly drain excess water during heavy rainfalls.

Responding to concerns over rainwater in trenches at construction sites, Narayana said the problem is temporary as several development works are still under way. Once the works are completed, there would be no waterlogging in the capital, he maintained.

The minister said the government is spending ₹126.28 crore on infrastructure development in Ponnur. The works include ₹22.10 crore under AMRUT 2.0 for water supply and restoration of Nagul Cheruvu, ₹10 crore from CRDA funds for CC roads and greenery, ₹28 crore under the HAM project, and mobilisation of UCF and UIDF funds to strengthen drainage.
