VIJAYAWADA: Union minister of state for rural development Pemmasani Chandrasekhar has said the vision initiated by chief minister Chandrababu Naidu in Amaravati would grow into a “massive tree” capable of reshaping the region’s healthcare ecosystem.

Addressing a gathering after the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Bolineni medical college and the skill development university at Nidamarru in Guntur district on Wednesday, the central minister said Amaravati has the potential to evolve into both a “Skill Capital” and a “Health Capital”.

This, he said, can be achieved through integrated growth in medical colleges, allied health sciences, nursing, pharmacology, dental sciences, engineering and management education.

He said integrated healthcare systems, where doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other medical professionals work in coordination, would deliver better treatment outcomes.

Chandrasekhar noted that globally renowned institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic in the US were built through long-term vision and determination, and Amaravati was now laying a similar foundation for world-class healthcare.

Highlighting the potential of medical tourism, he said the global medical tourism industry is valued at nearly $70-80 billion, with countries like India, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia leading the sector. Amaravati too can emerge as an international medical tourism destination with world-class infrastructure, an international airport and a green urban environment.

The minister noted that Telugu doctors constituted a significant section of Indian medical professionals working in the US and Andhra Pradesh could provide world-class healthcare services at 70 to 80 per cent lower costs compared to America if proper infrastructure is developed.

He also stressed the importance of skill development for India’s youth.

National security advisory board member and AP government honorary adviser on aviation and defence, Satish Reddy, said the state had already launched a Quantum Mission after recognising the growing importance of quantum technology.

Efforts, he said, are under way, with support from defence minister Rajnath Singh to develop fifth-generation fighter aircraft manufacturing technology in Andhra Pradesh. Reddy also praised KIMS for its advances in AI-based medical devices and research.

KIMS chairman Bolineni Bhaskar Rao said blocks and rooms in the hospital would be named after farmers who donated land for the Amaravati capital city. He said the sacrifices of nearly 30,000 farmers who pooled 33,000 acres for the capital would remain unforgettable, he said.
