A sanitation worker in Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, threatened to jump off a water tank in protest over delayed and unpaid salary dues.
Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema District: A contract sanitation worker at the Amalapuram Municipal Corporation in the district on Wednesday threatened to jump off a water tank in protest over a delayed and unpaid salary due to him.
Mallavarapu Meera Saheb said that he was working with the Town Level Federation for the past three months as a contract worker without payment. He climbed the water tank located within the municipal corporation premises and threatened officials that he would jump from the tank and commit suicide if his dues were not paid. Family members, union leaders, municipal officials, and others pleaded with him to come down. Upon their assurance that his salary would be paid, the worker came down, much to the relief of his family members.
Municipal Assistant Engineer Venkatesh stated that a technical error delayed the salary processing, but confirmed that Saheb was already paid Rs 36,000. Instructions were issued to the Town Level Federation to release the remaining balance for him and other workers shortly.
