Kakinada: Air pollution levels in Rajamahendravaram of East Godavari district are causing concern. It is sometimes worse than the Air Quality Index (AQI) in New Delhi.

The average AQI in New Delhi is 166 to 255 PM (Particulate Matter). One week ago, East Godavari district collector Keerthi Chekuri said the air quality index had been more than PM 300. On Saturday, its reading had been PM 279. It fell to 179 in the afternoon. Keerthi Chekuri herself had to go through cough for a week.
The collector has asked the AP Pollution Control Board engineers to find out why air pollution is so high in Rajamahendravaram. She expressed concern over pollutants in River Godavari too. She wants a solution to cleanse the pollution in the river before the 2027 Godavari Pushkaralu start.
Keerthi Chekuri asked the Pollution Control Board, Rural Water and Irrigation departments, apart from other departments, to work on elimination of pollution in Godavari River.
AP Pollution Control Board authorities said during winter season, air pollution is higher as the particulate matter released by vehicles, industries and other sources is trapped by fog or mist in the air.
Interacting with media at Rajamahendravaram on Saturday, Keerthi Chekuri said that there is a need to encourage natural farming. But many farmers are still using fertilisers as these give them a higher yield and better returns.
The collector said farmers must understand that though the yield is lower in natural farming, their produce fetches higher prices in the market. In particular, she asked farmers to shift from paddy to horticulture crops, where natural farming is effective.
