Nellore: The prohibition and excise department registered 36 cases during a week-long special enforcement drive across Nellore district to curb illegal liquor sales and maintain public health and law and order.

The drive resulted in the seizure of 280 liquor bottles of 180 ml each from persons allegedly involved in the illegal storage and sale of liquor. The accused were arrested and cases were booked against them.

Officials also registered cases against 67 persons found consuming alcohol in public places. The department said public drinking and the operation of unauthorised liquor outlets, commonly known as belt shops, are prohibited and would attract stringent legal action.

As part of the campaign, awareness posters were displayed at liquor outlets and other prominent locations. The department has also been conducting awareness programmes in colleges on the harmful effects of drug abuse.

The district prohibition and excise officer appealed to the public to report excise-related offences through local officials or the toll-free helpline 14405.
