2025 Sees Highest Organ Donations in Andhra Pradesh, 93 Donors Give 301 Organs
Live organ transplantation, especially of kidneys and liver, has also been an important aspect.
Vishakhpatnam: 2025, Andhra Pradesh achieved a remarkable milestone in organ donations and transplantations. As per the Jeevandan records, relatives of a record number of 93 persons okayed harvesting of organs after the latter died. This benefitted 301 individuals in getting a new lease of life.
This surge reflects a significant growth in organ donations over the past five years, highlighting the increasing awareness and acceptance of donating organs among people of AP.
Between 2020 and 2025, the number of deceased whose organs have been donated rose dramatically from just 2 to 93, totalling to 244 donors and 795 organs retrieved. Among the donors, 175 are males and 69 females. The age of most donors ranged between 21 years and 60 years. However, organ contributions have been notable even from individuals over 60 years.
Such diverse demographic participation signifies organ donations becoming a collective responsibility among people.
Live organ transplantation, especially of kidneys and liver, has also been an important aspect. Over the past five years, there have been 1,697 kidney and 43 liver transplantations. The number of kidney transplants have increased steadily, rising from 122 in 2020 to 339 in 2025. Although liver transplants are fewer in number, they increased from none in 2020 to a peak of 14 in 2024, then 7 in 2025.
These statistics indicate strengthening of medical infrastructure and families' willingness to support life-saving procedures.
Officials highlight that the increase in donations from deceased is crucial for meeting the demand for organs, like hearts, which cannot be sourced from living donors. The sharp rise in 2025 is attributed to improved hospital coordination, awareness campaigns, and families' readiness to consent to organ donation. The programme has also benefited from the active involvement of medical professionals and support systems, which ensure timely retrieval and transplantation.
Jeevandan initiative has become a cornerstone of Andhra Pradesh’s healthcare system, effectively connecting donor families with patients in need. According to Dr K. Rambabu, Director of VIMS and state coordinator for Jeevandan, with 2025 setting new records, they are expecting to build on the momentum of 2026, aiming to reduce the organ waiting list and expand access to transplants.
“This five-year progress represents not only advancements in medical practices, but also a growing public commitment to organ donation. By embracing the idea that one donor can save multiple lives, Andhra Pradesh has established itself as a leader in organ donation and transplantation in India,” says Dr. Rambabu
