177 Families Vacate As GVMC Pushes Housing Project

Visakhapatnam: GVMC commissioner Ketan Garg has directed officials to expedite site clearance and levelling works at Velampeta Lakshmi Nagar for the foundation‑laying of a modern multi‑storeyed housing project. The project aims to provide 177 poor families with flats at the same location.
Commissioner Ketan Garg visited Lakshmi Nagar on Monday and inspected the process by which residents were voluntarily vacating their houses. GVMC machinery was deployed to remove vacated huts and clear the site. He was accompanied by additional commissioner P.M. Satyaveni, chief engineer P.V.V. Satyanarayana Raju, south zone zonal commissioner M. Mallaiah Naidu, executive engineer Tara Prasanna and assistant city planner Jhansi Lakshmi.
Speaking on the occasion, Ketan Garg said GVMC had drawn up a special action plan to construct the housing complex and assured that formal allotment letters would be issued to all eligible beneficiaries. He noted that residents vacating their houses in trust of GVMC’s assurance marked a significant step towards realising the project.
He instructed officials to remove structures without delay and complete levelling on a day‑and‑night basis to ensure readiness for the foundation‑laying ceremony, which will be held shortly in the presence of the municipal administration and urban development minister and public representatives.
The commissioner also directed additional commissioner Satyaveni to arrange six months’ rent in advance for families shifting to rented accommodation. Residents requested the issuance of assurance letters, to which Ketan Garg responded that they would be distributed after the foundation‑laying ceremony.
Deputy executive engineer Venkateswara Rao, APD Padmavathi, ward planning and amenities secretaries, officials, staff and residents participated in the programme.
