1.52 Crore People Download ‘Shakthi’ App Meant for Protection of Women in AP: DGP

Vijayawada: As many as 1.52 crore people downloaded Shakthi app, aimed to provide protection to women, on their mobiles phones so far in AP, said director general of police Harish Kumar Gupta.
In a statement issued here on Monday, the DGP said the app was heaving modern features and could be available in both English and Hindi languages. He added that 11.60 lakh people pressed SOS to call for emergency help in which 34,192 calls were registered for immediate response while 3,193 FIRs registered. He further said that through the app, they received 242 requests for family counselling, 160 for safe travel and 18 for missing children.
The DGP said they had formed 164 Shakthi teams under the supervision of an IG-level officer for protection of women in the state and they had identified 900 hotspots and started keeping a close tab on them. He explained that they were also creating awareness on the need and usage of the Shakthi app at railway stations, bus stands, public places. He said they also held awareness programmes in Shakthi Teams in rural areas for the benefit of the women in addition to identifying 254 men involving in eve teasing.
Maintaining that the police department was according top priority for protection of women and girls, the DGP said they had set up a Women and Child Safety wing, led by IG Raja Kumari at the state level. He pointed out that 169 people were convicted in various courts on charges of murder, rape and gang rape and also under provisions of the Protection of Chidren from Secual Offences Act 2012 in the last 10 months in AP.
