Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh has received a major boost to its medical education sector with the National Medical Commission granting permission for an additional 100 MBBS seats in two government medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic year.

Announcing the development on Friday, Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav said NMC has issued Letters of Permission (LoPs) for increasing MBBS intake by 75 seats at the government medical college in Kadapa and 25 seats at the ACSR government medical college in Nellore.

With the latest approval, the MBBS intake at the Kadapa government medical college has increased from 175 to 250 seats, while the intake at the ACSR government medical college, Nellore, has gone up from 175 to 200 seats. The expansion would provide greater opportunities for aspiring medical students in the state and strengthen AP’s healthcare education infrastructure.

The minister said the additional seats reflected the state's continued efforts to expand access to quality medical education and meet the growing demand for trained healthcare professionals.

Medical education director Dr Vishnuvardhan attributed the NMC's approval to the significant improvements made in government medical colleges across the state. He said the enhancement of infrastructure, recruitment of qualified teaching faculty and strict adherence to the NMC's prescribed standards had enabled the institutions to secure the additional seats.

Vishnuvardhan congratulated the principals, faculty members and medical staff of the government medical colleges at Kadapa and Nellore for their collective efforts in achieving the milestone. Their commitment to upgrading academic and clinical facilities played a key role in obtaining the approvals, he said.
