Vijayawada: A family in Vijayawada celebrated Sankranti by serving a royal feast to their son-in-law on Tuesday. It consisted of 185 dishes, marking the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

This, by far, was the highest in terms of the number of food items a family has served their son-in-law in Vijayawada. Such a feast is traditionally served in the Godavari districts.

The feast consisted of curries, powders, vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, sweets, fruits and other dishes.

The special family here was of the Kokkura Venkata Shesha Eswara Rao and Lakshmi Kumari couple. They are government teachers in the NTR district and residing at Darsipet in Patamata.

They performed their daughter, Veena Sahithi's marriage to Gopi Chand from Ponnur in Guntur district on Dec 14. The daughter and son-in-law came home during the Sankranti festival.

The mother-in-law was determined to do something in a way the son-in-law would be surprised.

“We prepared 185 types of dishes like fruits, curries, sweets, curry powders, and pickles besides vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items. These included 55 varieties of sweets, 12 fruits, 13 flavoured rice, Pulka, Roti, 6 curry powders, 6 pickles, 12 vegetarian items, 15 non-vegetarian items, etc,” she said.

Father-in-law Eswara Rao and mother-in-law Lakshmi Kumari served the delicacies to their son-in-law and daughter by arranging a special dining table.

Visibly shocked, the son-in-law said it would be very difficult for anybody to even taste so many delicacies in one sweet go. He expressed his happiness and thanked the mother-in-law and father-in-law for the grand treat on the occasion of Sankranti.

“This is part of a custom to serve meals in an elaborate manner to newly married couples on their first visit to their mother-in-law's house on the occasion of Makar Sankranti,” the family has explained.
