Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the people of Manipur to build a “bridge of harmony” between the hill and valley communities while appealing to various groups to shun violence.

Stating that his government stood with the people of Manipur and wanted to make the state a symbol of peace and prosperity, the Prime Minister addressed two rallies, one in Kuki-dominated Churachandpur and another in Meitei-dominated Imphal, where he also met internally displaced families living in relief camps.
In his first visit to the state since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, Modi said the Centre's continuous efforts for peace had facilitated talks between the two warring sides. "I appeal to all organisations to move forward on the path of peace to fulfil your dreams and secure the future of your children. I promise you that I am with you. The Government of India is with you, and the people of Manipur are together," he said.
Asserting that Manipur is a land of courage and bravery, the Prime Minister praised the passion of the people who had gathered despite heavy rains. "Violence engulfed a wonderful land. After speaking to displaced families, I can say a new dawn of hope is knocking at the doors of Manipur. Peace is essential for development," he said.
Highlighting infrastructure initiatives, Modi announced projects worth around `Rs 7,000 crore, including the Jiribam-Imphal railway line, built at a cost of Rs 22,000 crore, and the new Imphal airport worth Rs 400 crore. He stressed that improved connectivity was creating opportunities for the people of Manipur and increasing jobs for the youth.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated 17 development projects valued at approximately Rs 1,200 crore during his visit to Imphal.
Referring to Manipur's contribution to India's independence, he recalled that the Indian National Army unfurled the first tricolour on Manipuri soil under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He also saluted the bravery of Manipuri soldiers, including martyr Deepak Chingakham, during Operation Sindoor, and emphasised that Indian culture and sports are incomplete without the contribution of Manipur.
Meanwhile, in a related development, 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, submitted a memorandum to Modi seeking a separate administration or Union Territory in Manipur. Citing ethnic persecution and displacement from valley areas, they argued that separation was the only path to lasting peace, security, and justice for their community.
The memorandum stated: "We can now live in peace only as good neighbours, never under the same roof again. We therefore strongly urge you to expedite dialogue to address our demand for a separate Union Territory with Legislature. This alone, we believe, will bring lasting peace and a sense of security, justice, and belonging to our people."
