DC Edit | Fly the tricolour from every home

Update: 2023-08-13 19:05 GMT

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to all citizens of India to fly the national tricolour at their homes is both inspiring and another laudable example of involving citizens in national affairs.

This year, too, Indian citizens by the millions will do an encore, not only unfurling and flying the Indian flag, but also using the Independence Day as a day of calm reflection, silent introspection and joyful celebrations.

We have achieved so much as a nation, even though we have a lot more to achieve and several challenges to overcome. But on the coming Independence Day, the Har Ghar Tiranga (tricolour in every home) initiative sets the tone of our national approach towards problem-solving and taking our nation forward on the path of greater achievement.

Even during the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Modi had placed a huge trust in the ordinary citizen, and used his popular appeal to reach out to all Indians to energise them as well as make them aware of the challenges ahead, sharing the ways to overcome it. If India succeeded against the dreaded Covid-19, it was not just because of the government, scientists, doctors, healthcare professionals and other frontline workers, but also due to the cooperation and support of the common man and woman.

The call to people to share their selfies with the tricolour appeals to contemporary sensibility, and allows for participation in and sharing of the nationalist spirit and personal commitment to the cause of the country. It enables people, especially the youth, to find common alignment with national goals.

As far as early indications go, the response from the people has been quite heartening. Educational institutions, residential complexes and colonies, hospitals, private firms and other collectives are making big plans to celebrate Independence Day.

Hopefully, every citizen will re-dedicate themselves to the spirit of our movement for Independence and keep the flag flying high throughout the year with their thought, word and action.

May the tricolour fly in every Indian home and heart!
