Guwahati: A day after massive protest by civil society groups in Imphal, all National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislators were flown to New Delhi on Sunday, triggering fresh speculation over the formation of a popular government by revoking the President’s rule in Manipur.

Informing that the legislators have been called by Mr Sambit Patra, the BJP’s Northeast in-charge, sources said that they are scheduled to take part in a meeting with central party leaders in New Delhi on Monday.

The proposed meeting has triggered speculation of the central government exploring the possibility of restoring the state assembly which has been under suspended animation since February 13, 2025.

Speaking to reporters before departing for New Delhi, BJP MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen indicated that government formation would be part of the discussions, while clarifying that they would be following the decision of the central party leadership. “Government formation is the agenda. However, for me, any leader chosen by the Centre is acceptable,” he said.

Another BJP MLA Nishikanta said that there has been a lot of speculation on social media about change of leadership but people should not believe it or draw any conclusion. He said the party follows its own internal mechanisms for deciding leadership issues while asserting that social media speculation are unreliable.

BJP MLA Heikham Dingko expressed confidence that the New Delhi deliberations would certainly lead to a positive outcome. “Something positive will definitely happen,” he said, hoping that the ongoing talks would help move the state out of political uncertainty.

Manipur BJP president A Sharda Devi, along with other senior BJP functionaries, also left Imphal for New Delhi.

It is significant that amid the speculation of Centre’s willingness to revoke President’s rule, several Kuki organisations have publicly stated that they will not support the formation of a popular government in Manipur, particularly in the valley areas.

Indicating that the Delhi meeting is expected to deliberate on the evolving situation in Manipur, including political stability, governance options and the Centre’s next course of action, security sources said that central leadership have been trying to take all the factions on board in process of restoring the state assembly and revoking the President’s rule.

However, no official statement has yet been issued by the BJP or the state leadership about the agenda of the meeting.
