New Delhi: All eyes are on the BJP as covert and overt parleys have intensified within the saffron corridors over the past few days. The closed-door meetings between BJP chief J.P. Nadda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday gave rise to speculation over the long-overdue election of the national BJP president.
According to sources, both Mr Modi and Mr Nadda, along with Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh and general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santhosh, had met on Wednesday as well. Mr Nadda, Mr Shah, Mr Singh and a few other Union ministers had held a meeting on Tuesday also.
Mr Nadda has been on an extension for nearly a year. Sources revealed that a meeting between the RSS and the BJP high command has already been held to zero in on Mr Nadda's replacement. Names forwarded by the RSS were reportedly debated and discussed within the BJP.
With Mr Modi meeting President Droupadi Murmu, there are also talks of a likely minor Cabinet reshuffle after the selection of the new BJP president. Though it was a courtesy meeting, as both had visited foreign countries, with the PM returning from the Bimstec meet.
Sources said several RSS leaders, including Suresh Soni, Dattatreya Hosabale and Arun Kumar, are also in the national capital. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is also in the NCR. Speculation is rife that the Sangh leaders could also meet the BJP top brass to discuss the plight of Hindus in West Bengal in the wake of anti-Waqf protests.
The cancellation of this week's Cabinet meeting and postponement of the Prime Minister's visit to Srinagar added to already heightened speculation of a "major decision" in the offing. The BJP, however, officially stated that the PM's visit to the valley was cancelled due to "weather forecast" and "cancellation of Cabinet meetings is a routine matter and it happened before.
