Pointing out that the supply of dal, sugar and salt at subsidised rates, which had been continuing for the past several months, will remain suspended for an indefinite period starting in June, sources said that it was considered to be one of the flagship schemes of the BJP government which had assured to enhance the benefit by adding the supply of subsidised mustard oil to ration card holders after the elections.
It is significant that since November 2025, beneficiaries have been receiving masoor dal at Rs 60 per kg, sugar at Rs 30 per kg and salt at Rs 10 per kg through fair price shops.
This scheme had provided relief to families by making essential commodities available at lower prices. However, the subsidy support provided by the Assam government under the previous budget was valid only until May this year. As a result, the supply of these items at subsidised rates has now been discontinued, sources said.
Sources however clarified that beneficiaries would continue to get rice as per existing provisions. Officials pointed out that the supply of subsidised dal, sugar and salt may resume only after a new budget is introduced by the state government.
