Mumbai: At least five people have died and eight others have been injured as heavy rains lashed several parts of Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, triggering severe flooding and displacing thousands.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday reviewed the flood situation across the affected regions, including the Marathwada districts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Dharashiv, and Parbhani, as well as Solapur in western Maharashtra.
Authorities have set up multiple relief camps, with over 6,500 people currently sheltered in Solapur alone, and thousands more evacuated across other districts. In Latur, more than 500 residents have been accommodated in camps, while in Beed, over 2,500 families were shifted to safer areas. In Parbhani, 1,386 people were relocated, and in Nanded, 67 residents were rescued as flooding affected the Godavari, Manjara, and Manyad river basins. Relief camps have been established in Nanded (304 people) and Loha (120 people), the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a post on X.
According to the Disaster Management Unit (DMU), the five fatalities include two people killed in a wall collapse in Ahilyanagar district, one person drowned in Yavatmal, one death each reported in Jalna and Nashik due to wall collapses. Eight others have sustained injuries in rain-related incidents. Additionally, 72 cattle have died across Washim, Nashik, Jalna, and Nanded districts.
Speaking from Chandrapur, CM Fadnavis said, “I have directed district collectors to ensure the availability of food, drinking water, and medical aid at all relief camps. I have also instructed that fodder be supplied immediately to areas facing shortages for cattle.”
Mr. Fadnavis further said that wherever houses have been inundated, the government will provide Rs 10,000 to affected homeowners. “Distribution of ration kits has also begun, and I have asked officials to monitor the ground situation closely to ensure effective relief delivery,” he added.
The CM further reviewed the water discharge status from dams with the Water Resources Department and emphasized the need for coordination with local administrations. Evacuations have been ordered in areas at risk due to large-scale water discharge.
Meanwhile, Indurani Jakhar, Palghar Collector has issued an order giving a holiday on Monday (September 29) to all the schools, junior and degree colleges for students. However, all teaching and non-teaching staff have been directed to remain present in the schools and colleges during office hours to help the local administration in the works of disaster management.
