New Delhi: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaspoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi late on Thursday evening. The two nations, members of the BRICS grouping, have both been slapped with 50 per cent tariffs by the Trump administration.

Following the conversation, Modi said on social media platform X: ”We are committed to deepening our Strategic Partnership including in trade, energy, tech, defence, health and more. A strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone."

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong took a veiled swipe on X at US President Donald Trump and stated: "Give the bully an inch and he will take a mile". He said using tariffs to supress other nations violated both the UN charter and WTO rules.

This comes even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit China for the SCO Summit. Beijing has been urging New Delhi to join hands to oppose hegemonism, a euphemism for Western dominance.
