Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has firmly denied reports suggesting the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days, stating that no such system currently exists and no official warnings have been issued.

Amid rising public concern and a surge in speculative media stories predicting a possible cyclone—purportedly named ‘Cyclone Shakti’—between May 23 and May 28, the IMD clarified that current weather models do not support such projections.

“There is no indication of any cyclonic system developing in the Bay of Bengal at this stage,” said reliable sources within the IMD. “While we continue to monitor meteorological models for any low-pressure formation, no conclusive data is available.”

The department urged media outlets to avoid circulating unverified information that could cause undue panic among the public. It reiterated that all official updates on cyclonic activity will be released through authorised bulletins.

Officials at the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre also confirmed that Odisha is not under any cyclone watch or warning at present.

The clarification comes in response to a flurry of rumours and speculative news items claiming a cyclone may hit the Odisha or West Bengal coasts later this month.

Meanwhile, the IMD has advised that intense heatwave conditions continue across several parts of Odisha, and there is a likelihood of thunderstorms in the coming days due to prevailing atmospheric conditions.
