Ladakh Records a Remarkable 56.15% Surge in July Tourist Footfall

SRINAGAR: Ladakh’s tourism sector is experiencing one of its strongest phases in recent years, with visitor numbers climbing sharply and consistently through 2026. The Union Territory has already recorded 3,30,332 tourist arrivals between January and July, touching 98.35 percent of the total footfall registered in the entire year of 2025.
This rapid rise signals Ladakh’s growing appeal as a premier destination for adventure, culture, spirituality and high‑altitude travel, the UT’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said on Sunday.
The momentum has been driven largely by an exceptional influx during June and July, when over 2.12 lakh tourists visited the region—amounting to nearly 65 percent of all arrivals so far this year. July alone witnessed a dramatic upswing: 1,05,046 tourists travelled to Ladakh compared to 67,273 in July 2025, marking a 56.15 percent year‑on‑year growth. Of these, 95,416 were domestic travellers, reflecting a strong national interest, while 9,630 were foreign visitors. June mirrored this upward trend with 1,07,740 arrivals, up from 75,089 in June 2025, registering a 43.48 percent increase, including 1,01,060 domestic and 6,680 foreign tourists.
Saxena attributed this sustained rise—particularly in domestic tourism—to Ladakh’s rapidly improving infrastructure and the nationwide encouragement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for citizens to explore India’s diverse destinations. He noted that crossing the one‑lakh mark for two consecutive months and nearly surpassing last year’s total by July reflects a powerful shift in Ladakh’s tourism landscape. He emphasised that Ladakh remains one of the safest destinations for travellers and highlighted the administration’s commitment to ensuring that tourism growth translates into sustainable livelihoods while safeguarding the region’s fragile ecology, cultural heritage and unique identity.
The officials in Leh said that the surge has also been fuelled by a vibrant calendar of cultural, spiritual and experiential events. Festivals such as the Hemis Festival, Pratham Sindhu Kumbh, Ladakh Astro Week 2026, Phyang Tsedup, and numerous monastic celebrations drew visitors seeking immersive experiences rooted in Ladakh’s Buddhist traditions, celestial landscapes and high‑altitude environment. Improved connectivity has played a pivotal role in expanding access to Ladakh, they added.
As per official statistics, of the 3,30,332 tourists who arrived till July, 1,57,371 (47.64 percent) travelled by air, while 1,16,523 (35.27 percent) entered via the Kashmir route and 56,438 (17.09 percent) through the Manali route. Since Ladakh became a Union Territory, its infrastructure has undergone a dramatic transformation- the road network has expanded from 1,799 km in 2019 to over 4,200 km in 2026, and the number of bridges has risen from 19 to 72. Seasonal closures on key routes have reduced drastically—Zoji La now shuts for only 16 days annually, down from 127, and the Kargil–Zanskar Road remains closed for just 11 days, compared to 154 earlier. Homestays have grown from 128 in 2019 to 2,275 in 2026, creating significant livelihood opportunities for local families, officials said.
“Tourism‑friendly reforms under L‑G Saxena’s leadership have further strengthened stakeholder confidence. Simplified documentation processes, reduced compliance burdens and the granting of Industry Status to hotels and guest houses have encouraged investment and improved services across the sector,” an official statement said. It added, “Collectively, these developments have positioned Ladakh as one of India’s fastest‑growing tourism destinations, attracting travellers seeking both adventure and serenity amid its unparalleled Himalayan landscapes”.
