The demolition of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s ancestral home in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, has been halted following widespread protests from India, according to reports.
The property, which originally belonged to Ray’s grandfather was being razed due to its deteriorated condition. However, the move drew immediate criticism from Indian authorities and prominent figures in the cultural sphere, prompting Bangladeshi officials to reconsider the decision.
According to reports, Bangladeshi authorities have constituted a committee to explore options for reconstructing the historic structure. The development has shifted what began as a local administrative action into a matter of international cultural concern, with potential diplomatic implications.
The Union government conveyed its objection, urging Bangladesh to preserve the building and also offered support for its preservation. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also raised a strong protest.
