Police fire at robbery suspect Kannan Mani in Mangaluru after he attacks officers and tries to escape
Mangaluru: Police opened fire on an accused in the Kotekaru Agricultural Cooperative Society robbery case when he tried to escape custody during a spot inspection on Tuesday.
The incident left three police personnel injured. The accused was apprehended with a gunshot wound.
The Mangaluru City Police had arrested three people in connection with the robbery on Jan 20.
Ullal Police Inspector Shri Balakrishna HN and his team took one of the accused Kannan Mani to the spot for inspection on Tuesday.
In a press statement, City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal said that at around 4.20 pm during the inspection, Mani attacked escorting personnel Anjanappa and Nithin with a broken beer bottle he found at the spot. He also pushed Inspector Balakrishna and tried to stab him. Despite being warned by a CCB Inspector with a shot in the air, Mani continued his assault and attempted to escape.
The CCB officer then fired at Mani’s leg, subduing him and taking him to custody.
Inspector Balakrishna, CCB unit PC Anjanappa, and Ullal Station PC Nithin were injured in the incident. All three and the accused were taken to Hospital for treatment.
A case has been registered at Ullal Police Station, and further investigation is ongoing.
