Kalia, The Fearless Farm Dog, Stares Down A 15-foot King Cobra

Bhubaneswar: He may not be a giant, but Kalia certainly has the heart of one. When a king cobra, estimated to be 15 feet long, appeared at a farmhouse in Odisha’s Rayagada district, the small hybrid dog stood his ground, keeping a watchful eye on the formidable intruder.

The dramatic encounter took place on October 10 at Sighari village under Muniguda block. The giant reptile appeared to be moving towards the poultry area, where around 3,000 laying hens are raised by farmhouse owner Phanis Ray.

Kalia, the farm’s trusted guardian, was quick to respond. Rather than retreating, he kept a close watch on the snake’s movements as the cobra cautiously surveyed its surroundings. The tense standoff took another turn when Kalia’s companion, Fexi, joined him. Faced with two alert dogs, the cobra eventually retreated towards the bank of the Vamsadhara river.

Local people captured the extraordinary encounter on camera, and the footage has since gone viral on social media.

For Pramod Kumar Sahukar, who gifted Kalia to Ray, the display of courage came as little surprise.

“Kalia is very courageous. Even as a puppy, he fearlessly confronted reptiles that tried to enter our house,” Sahukar said, recalling the dog’s instinctive readiness to defend familiar surroundings.

Kalia’s courage, it appears, runs in the family. His brother, Kalu, guards the sprawling horticultural orchard of social worker Dr Gouranga Charan Rout at the foothills of the Niyamgiri hills, where he reportedly keeps watch despite the presence of wild animals.

Kalia is the offspring of Jerry, a Labrador, and Tommy, a German Shepherd.

At Ray’s farmhouse, Kalia’s daily duty is to guard the property and its inhabitants. On October 10, that instinct put him face-to-face with one of nature’s most formidable reptiles.

For now, Kalia’s remarkable encounter has made the little farm guardian an unlikely local hero.
