Hyderabad:A major fire in Sainagar Colony on Tuesday reduced 30 huts to ashes. Although there were no casualties, residents were left heartbroken over the loss of their savings, household items and important documents.

Nagole inspector A. Surya Naik said the fire started around 11.40 am at Hut No. 507, belonging to Goswami Rakesh in Street No. 7. “A witness, Lohita, reported seeing two electrical wires come into contact, causing sparks that fell onto the plastic sheets of the hut. A gas cylinder exploded inside the locked house, intensifying the blaze and spreading the fire rapidly,” he said.

The fire spread across the seven-acre settlement, which houses nearly 650 dwellings, including cement-brick structures. Ten huts in Street No. 7, eleven in Street No. 8, five in Street No. 9 and four in Street No. 6 were gutted. A resident said, “The huts here are made of plastic covers, which caused the fire to spread swiftly. Only the cement-brick houses were able to withstand the flames. Otherwise, the damage would have been far worse.”

Six fire tenders, Nagole police and DRF teams rushed to the site and managed to contain the fire before it could spread further. “We entered into houses and removed at least 50 gas cylinders to prevent additional explosions,” explained inspector Naik.

After the flames were extinguished, victims were left staring at the charred remains of their belongings. One resident, who had recently borrowed Rs 10 lakh for his daughter’s wedding, saw his savings go up in smoke. Another parent had saved `5 lakh for his son’s college education, now lost in the blaze.
