Bhubaneswar: A decomposed body of a man was recovered under mysterious circumstances from an agricultural field in Odisha's Kendrapara district on Friday, prompting a police investigation into its identity and the circumstances surrounding the death.

The body was found in a field at Namania under the Petapada area of the district. Local residents suspect it could be that of Gouranga Sethi, a resident of Mahadeipatna village who has been missing for the past nine days.

Police, however, said the identity of the deceased had not been established till this story was filed.

On receiving information, police personnel, along with forensic and scientific teams, rushed to the spot and began an investigation. Parts of the decomposed body were recovered from the site for examination.

According to local sources, Sethi had allegedly been abducted by a group of miscreants following an assault and had remained untraceable since then. The discovery of the body nearly 30 km from his village has fuelled speculation that it may be linked to his disappearance.

Family members of the missing man suspect foul play and alleged that he may have been murdered before the body was dumped in the field.

However, officials said the advanced state of decomposition has made immediate identification difficult. Forensic experts have been engaged to assist in the investigation.

Senior police officers, including the Kendrapara Superintendent of Police, visited the site to supervise the probe.

Meanwhile, Sethi's family has been informed about the recovery. Police sources said a DNA test may be conducted to establish the identity of the deceased and determine whether the body is that of the missing man.

Further investigation was underway.
