Hyderabad:The Cyberabad cybercrime police said they had arrested four persons from AP for allegedly providing bank accounts that were used for carrying out two different cybercrimes in which two persons were cheated of Rs 3.46 crore.

In one case, the victim was cheated of Rs 2,90,04,585 after fraudsters, posing as stock market experts, lured the victim to join a WhatsApp group and start investing through a fake trading application.

The accused portrayed the application as a foreign institutional investor (FII) platform registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and showed manipulated profits and bogus IPO allotments to gain his trust, police said.

The scam came to light after his attempts to withdraw money were reportedly blocked and the scamsters demanded additional payments. Investigating into his complaint, police arrested Shivakanth Raju Datla and Surya Bhagavan Morapaka, both from Andhra Pradesh, for allegedly providing bank accounts to route the cheated money for commission.

In the second case, a 74-year-old woman was allegedly placed under a digital arrest and was cheated of `56,50,000. Fraudsters posed as telecom officials and intimidated the victim by claiming that her Aadhaar card was linked to serious crimes, including money laundering and human trafficking.

She was later also connected with alleged Mumbai police officers and was reportedly shown forged RBI documents through WhatsApp video calls. Two accused – Kesana Manikya Rao and Kesana Laxmi Nandini, both from Andhra Pradesh – were arrested for allegedly supplying bank accounts used to siphon off the money.

Overall, between January 16 and January 22, the cybercrime police detected 14 cases and arrested 23 persons across multiple states. Of these, six cases involved trading fraud (11 arrests), three digital arrest cases (five arrests), two part-time job fraud cases (three arrests), one job fraud case (two arrests), and two loan fraud cases (two arrests).

During the same period, courts issued 354 refund orders in 70 cases, leading to the return of `1.06 crore to victims.
