Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, a couple from Pokatunga village in Odisha's Angul district lost their lives after coming into contact with a live wire trap laid by wildlife poachers in the Bantala area on Sunday night.

The victims, Sura Pradhan (50) and his wife Sukanti Pradhan (45), were employed at a local farmhouse and were well-regarded in their community for their hard work and kindness. The couple left their workplace for an errand but failed to return home, prompting a search by concerned villagers.

Their bodies were discovered around midnight in a nearby forest, entangled in an electric wire believed to be part of a poaching trap designed to target wild animals such as elephants and leopards. These illegal traps are a growing concern in the region, often endangering both wildlife and human lives.

Police confirmed the cause of death as electrocution and have launched an investigation into the incident. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of these innocent lives,” said Angul District Police Superintendent Rajesh Kumar. “Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.”

The bodies were taken to the Angul District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. The incident has sparked outrage among locals, highlighting the urgent need to address poaching activities in the area.
