Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma told the assembly that singer Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore was murder, not an accident, as the SIT intensifies its probe.

Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg was a“plain and simple murder” and one person killed him and others helped.

While asserting this in the Assam assembly Mr Sarma said, “After preliminary probe, the Assam Police was sure that it was not a case of culpable homicide, but it was a plain and simple murder.”

He said, “That is why, section 103 of BNS was added to the case within three days of his death.”

The SIT under the CID of the state police has so far arrested seven people, examined 252 witnesses and seized 29 items in connection with the case, he said. “One of the accused killed Garg and others helped him. Four to five people are being booked in the murder case,” the chief minister claimed.

"After the chargesheet in the murder case is submitted in December, the probe will be expanded to include negligence, criminal breach of trust and other aspects," he added.

Mr Sarma, reiterated that the SIT will file a "watertight chargesheet, and the motive behind the crime would shock the people of the state".

Assam chief minister said this while intervening into an adjournment motion brought by opposition leadrs to discuss the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death in Singapore on September 19.

The motion, brought separately by leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia and independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, was admitted after the chief minister asked the speaker to allow the discussion.

Mr Sarma said that the government was “equally seized of the matter” and requested that the motion be taken up, while adding that the Treasury benches would not participate in the debate and would only present the government’s formal response.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary allowed the adjournment motion, noting that the scheduled bills would be tabled after the discussion. He cautioned members to avoid remarks that could interfere with the ongoing investigation.

Singer Zubeen Garg, 52, died while swimming in the sea in Singapore. The Assam government has constituted SIT to probe the circumstances leading to the death of the singer.
