KOLKATA: A young Trinamul Congress worker was brutally murdered by a gang of miscreants on Thursday night at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas of West Bengal.

The victim, Rezzak Khan (38), was Chalta Beria president of the ruling party and lived near Maricha area. He was also known to be a close aide of Canning Purba TMC MLA Shaokat Molla.

Rezzak earlier was close to former party MLA and strongman of Bhangar Arabul Islam. He later switched his loyalty to Mr Molla.

At around 9.30 pm on Thursday the TMC worker was returning home from a nearby market after attending a party meeting, his brother Ishaque Khan said.

A gang of armed men fired three rounds at him on the road first. As Rezzak fell on the ground with bullet injuries, his attackers hacked him to death.

Ishaque said that he was not aware of the attackers’ identity but suspected political rivalry behind his brother's murder. Mr Molla however accused the Indian Secular Front (ISF) of his follower’s murder.

ISF MLA Noushad Siddique refuted the allegations. Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma visited the spot later. He said that a probe has been underway.
