Women’s Commission Seeks Report On Alleged Gunpoint Rape In Bhubaneswar
Special police team formed; CCTV footage being examined to trace unidentified accused: Reports
BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) has sought a detailed report from the Bhubaneswar police commissionerate following an allegation that a 26-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint inside her rented house in the Nayapalli area of the state capital.
The Commission has directed the Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to submit a report on the case within 15 days, including details of the investigation and action taken so far.
The alleged incident was reported at Nayapalli police station on Wednesday night after the woman lodged a complaint against an unidentified person. According to the FIR, the accused allegedly entered her rented accommodation and threatened her with what was reported to be a gun or toy gun before sexually assaulting her.
The accused has not been identified or arrested so far.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the reported place of occurrence and adjoining areas in an attempt to establish the movements of the suspect and identify him. A special team has also been constituted to trace and apprehend the accused.
Police personnel have reportedly been conducting searches and raids at different locations in Bhubaneswar as part of the investigation.
Taking note of the allegations, the OSCW sought details from the police on the circumstances of the incident and the progress of the investigation. The 15-day deadline is intended to obtain a status report on the steps taken to identify and arrest the accused.
The case has drawn concern in the state capital, with the investigation continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence and identify the person involved.
Local police officials were not immediately available for comment on the Commission’s direction or the progress of the investigation.
