New Delhi: The Indian Army on Sunday dismissed as “false news” reports claiming that India had conducted drone strikes on Ulfa(I) camps inside Myanmar, a senior army official said.

The proscribed Ulfa(I) issued a press statement alleging that drone and missile attacks struck its mobile camps along the Myanmar border in the early hours. The outfit claimed that Nayan Asom, alias Nayan Medhi, its “chairman” of the lower council, was killed and about 19 others were injured. In a subsequent statement, Ulfa(I) asserted that missiles were launched at the camp during Medhi’s last rites, killing two additional senior leaders, “brigadier” Ganesh Asom and “colonel” Pradip Asom, and injuring several members and civilians.

Assam Chief Minister and Home Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma denied any involvement by the state police or attacks originating from Assam soil. Speaking during a visit to Golaghat district, he said, “The Assam Police is not involved in this, and no strike has been carried out from our soil. If the Army had conducted such an operation, it would have issued a statement. More information is needed, but I expect clarity by this evening.”
