New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday received congratulatory messages from global leaders on becoming India’s longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister.

Among those who extended greetings were Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Antonio Costa, Anwar Ibrahim, former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.

Ms von der Leyen said, “Dear @narendramodi, today you're becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister India has had. Congratulations! With you, India not only landed on the moon, it is shooting for the stars. And so is our India-European Union (EU) friendship. From our cooperation on technology, mobility, security and the mother of all trade deals. Thank you for all that we have achieved together.”

“It has been a pleasure to meet again in Rome in recent weeks and to launch together a Special Strategic Partnership that looks to the future to create new opportunities for our Nations and our peoples,” Meloni posted on social media.

The Kremlin on Wednesday praised Narendra Modi for becoming India's longest-serving elected prime minister, saying that 250 million people had been pulled out of poverty during his rule.

"During the rule of Modi, 250 million people have been pulled out of poverty," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "This is a very important indicator for India."

"It is a country that has become one of the world's leading economic powers with the fastest rates of economic growth and development. And, most importantly for us, a country with which we have partnership relations," Peskov said.

Costa said, “Congratulations Prime Minister @narendramodi on becoming the longest serving Prime Minister of India. Under your visionary leadership, relations between the EU and India are stronger than ever, as evidenced by our historic summit earlier this year. I look forward to our continued cooperation, partnership and friendship.”

Ibrahim said, “Heartiest congratulations to PM Modi on this historic milestone of becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement stands as a testament to his years of dedicated public service and leadership in advancing India’s development, prosperity and standing on the global stage. Malaysia values its close and longstanding friendship with India, and I look forward to continuing our cooperation in strengthening bilateral ties and expanding opportunities for our peoples. I wish PM Modi continued success and the people of India continued peace, progress and prosperity.”

Gor said, "Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement is a powerful testament to his decades of dedicated public service and leadership! Wishing him all the best!"

Morrison also praised Modi’s leadership and said he looked forward to his visit to Australia next month.

Earlier, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in a letter dated June 8, conveyed greetings, stating, “This milestone is a testament not only to your years in office, but also to the trust and confidence that the people of the world’s largest democracy have repeatedly placed in your leadership.”

Prime Minister James Marape, in a video message, described Modi as “a role model and an example of leadership” and added, “Lifting over 200 million people out of poverty to good life today is an amazing feat.”

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also conveyed her congratulations.

The messages underline continued diplomatic engagement and recognition from international leaders.
