Woman Killed, 2 Others Injured In Tiger Attack In MP Reserve, Big Cat Dies Due To Suspected Overdose Of Tranquilizers, 3rd Human Death In May

BHOPAL: A tribal woman was killed and two others were injured in the attack by a tiger in a forested village in Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh, officials said on Sunday.

The incident took place in the village of Kherwa Tolla falling under the Panpath buffer zone of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve (BTR) late on Saturday night.

The tiger attacked Phulbai (48) when she was sleeping in the courtyard of her house in the village, killing her on the spot.

Later, the big cat pounced on two other villagers, identified as Dasaiya and Phulla, wounding them seriously, officials said.

A team of forest officials rushed to the spot and rescued the tiger with much difficulty.

The big cat however died after tranquilization.

The cause of the death of the tiger is being investigated, forest officials said.

However, overdose of tranquilizers was suspected to have caused the death of the tiger, sources said.

Meanwhile, the local villagers heckled the team of forest officials visiting the area to take stock of the situation.

Irate villagers also damaged their vehicle.

Heavy police deployment has been made in the area to maintain law and order.

Chief minister Mohan Yadav announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 to the family of the deceased and free treatment to the injured who were admitted to the local hospital.

This was the third death in the tiger attack in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in May.

On May three, a 46-year-old tribal was killed by a tiger in the village of Kudri falling under the BTR when he was collecting fuel wood in the forest.

On May 16, a woman was killed by a tiger in the same area when she was plucking tendu leaves.
