Bhubaneswar: In an unusual incident, a young woman who was bitten by a snake while attempting to place it inside a plastic container reached Baripada Hospital in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Friday, carrying the reptile with her.

The woman, identified as Soumya Satpathy, received medical treatment and was reported to be in stable condition at the time of reporting.

According to reports, Soumya had accompanied her father to catch the snake after it entered a place from which it could not find its way out. While attempting to put the reptile inside a plastic container, she was bitten on the hand.

Recounting the incident, Soumya said the snake’s tooth grazed her finger as she tried to place it inside the container.

“While I was holding it, the snake tilted its head slightly, and its tooth grazed my finger as I tried to put it inside the container. We had no other option because, if we had let it go, people might have beaten it to death. The family members could have panicked and killed it out of fear,” she said.

She explained that the snake appeared unable to find its way out of the place where it had entered, prompting her to intervene and take it out.

Soumya’s decision to carry the snake to the hospital ensured that the reptile was available for identification, though attempting to handle a snake without professional assistance can be dangerous. Experts generally advise people to maintain a safe distance from snakes and contact trained rescuers rather than attempting to catch or handle them.

The incident highlights the importance of professional snake rescue services and public awareness about safely handling encounters with reptiles.
