KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced a new scheme, Shramashree, to rehabilitate the state's migrant workers who have been subjected to attacks outside, mainly the BJP-ruled states, on the suspicion of being Bangladeshi infiltrators based on their mother tongue.

She informed the state secretariat Nabanna that each of those affected, willing to return home, would get a one-time aid of ₹5,000 on arrival and then monthly financial assistance of ₹5000 for 12 months or till they get a new job. They will also get identity cards and other government benefits after registering themselves at ‘Shramashree’ portal, according to the CM.

Ms Banerjee said, “Around 22.40 lakh migrant workers from our state work outside. All of them can avail the scheme. So far 10,000 among them have made a comeback after facing harassment in other states, especially those having double-engine governments. The cabinet has given its approval for the scheme to rehabilitate the migrant workers willing to return and start their lives afresh here.”

She added that the state labour department would act as the nodal department for the scheme. The CM also suspected the AIIMS, Kalyani of conducting an NRC survey on the pretext of carrying out a mental health survey. She alleged, “They are indirectly surveying for the NRC. If any organisation visits your house in the name of a survey, verify it with the state government first.”

Ms Banerjee claimed, “The state government is not conducting any such survey. There are agencies which, in the garb of various organisations, were conducting door-to-door surveys to strike off your names from the voters' list. Be alert. Do not share your details with anybody other than the state government officials. I will ask AIIMS not to play such games. The state government has its mental health department. It's their job and not yours.”
