WB Govt Makes District Magistrates Birth, Death Registrars
These progressive measures are designed to ensure better accuracy, efficiency and seamless service for our People
Kolkata: The BJP government has replaced the gram panchayat and municipal body heads with district magistrates as the registrars of births and deaths in West Bengal. Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the move on Friday.
Sharing his government's order on X-handle, he stated, “Gram Panchayat Pradhans and Municipal Chairmen/ Executive Officers will transition out of their previous roles as Registrars in regards to Birth and Death Registrations in West Bengal.”
Mr Adhikari elaborated, “Our Government is continuously working to make public administration more transparent, accountable and accessible for every citizen of West Bengal. To further improve public service delivery, we have introduced key structural reforms in the Registration of Births and Deaths across the State.”
He added, “District-Level Oversight: The District Magistrate & Collector of each revenue district will now officially function as the District Registrar of Births and Deaths, bringing centralized coordination to the district level.”
The CM also said, “Strengthening Institutional Registration: Block Medical Officers of Health (BMOH), rural Hospital Superintendents and Medical College Heads will act as Registrars for all institutional Births and Deaths within their respective healthcare facilities.”
He underlined, “Dedicated Government Officers: Government Officers will now be appointed as Registrars for every Gram Panchayat and Municipality to streamline record-keeping and administrative workflows. These progressive measures are designed to ensure better accuracy, efficiency and seamless service for our People.”
