Two people sustained injuries after a portion of the ceiling collapsed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, leading to an inspection of the redevelopment site.

Two people were injured after a portion of the ceiling collapsed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station on Thursday night, October 22, prompting railway authorities to order a safety audit of ongoing redevelopment work.

The incident occurred around 10.05 pm near the reservation hall entrance opposite the Divisional Railway Manager’s office, where redevelopment work is being carried out by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). The injured were identified as Vinayak Balu Hatkar, 28, and Ayan Naushad Matwankar, 24. Both were rushed to the government-run St George’s Hospital for treatment.

According to railway officials, Hatkar sustained a 3–4 cm laceration on the right side of his scalp that required stitches. Matwankar suffered an injury to his left upper eyelid, abrasions on his shoulder blade and neck, and pain and swelling in his right ankle. Following the incident, railway officials inspected the affected area and ordered a safety audit of the redevelopment work to assess site conditions and safety precautions. The exact cause of the ceiling collapse has not yet been established, and further details about the inspection were awaited.

The incident has raised concerns about passenger safety at CSMT, one of Mumbai’s busiest railway stations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where redevelopment work is underway to upgrade infrastructure and passenger facilities.
