Kolkata/Berhampore: Trinamul Congress on Thursday suspended its rebel MLA Humayun Kabir for his controversial plan to lay the foundation stone of Babri Masjid on December 6 at Beldanga in Murshidabad of West Bengal. State minister Firhad Hakim announced the party's action, slamming Mr Kabir's initiative as “anti-party activities.”

Mr Hakim said in the city, “We are suspending Mr Kabir from our party. Our party will have no relation with him as it does not stay in touch with those playing divisional politics on religion. As Bharatpur MLA, he suddenly made a plan to build Babri Masjid. Why? Because, the aim is to stoke the religious sentiments of the Babri Masjid demolition.”

He added, “Moreover, why did Mr Kabir choose December 6 as the date? If he has so much money, why didn't he do anything else in the name of the martyrs? Will Bengal remain stuck in between Ram Mandir and Babri Masjid? No. It is a plan of the BJP to divide the society. They are behind Mr Kabir's plan.”

Mr Hakim alleged, “They hired him to play communal politics ahead of the Assembly Election like it did in the past. Beldanga was selected for the plan to trigger riots since it was communally sensitive recently.” Mr Kabir learnt about his suspension when he was at the public rally of TMC supremo and chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Berhampore.

He rushed out of the venue, fuming and said, “I was called here to get insulted. This is a conspiracy. I will quit TMC on Friday and will announce my new outfit on December 22,” before hinting at his resignation as an MLA in the next few days. “I will contest in 135 seats in the upcoming polls against TMC and BJP. Let TMC fight me if they have guts.”

Later speaking at the rally, Ms Banerjee called Mr Kabir 'Mir Jafar' and an ‘insect’ in a veiled reference. She said, “Nawab Sirajuddaula once tried hard to save Bengal. He even placed his crown on Mir Jafar. But Mir Jafar betrayed him. Same happened this time also. A traitor is the enemy of the nation. No one should forgive him.”

She added, “Beware of BJP stooges! Before elections, they do it, funded by BJP. When we find an insect in something, we pick and throw it out to save the rest.” Hitting back at her, Mr Kabir claimed, “She is stopping the Muslims from building a mosque but is building numerous temples for Hindus. I will see how long she enjoys such power.”

He added, “I would rather welcome a direct BJP CM instead of such a RSS-approved CM.” Within a few hours, a profile on his name surfaced on Facebook, seeking donations for his initiative. Meanwhile, a petition has been filed at the Calcutta High Court seeking a stay on Mr Kabir's plan. It is likely to be heard on Friday.
