TMC Councillor Ends Life After Posters of His Misdeeds Hit Area
Family members of Sanjay found him hanging from the ceiling in a room in the morning
Kolkata: A Trinamul Congress councillor ended his life by hanging himself at his residence in Dum Dum of the city on Saturday days after posters, seeking return of land he had illegally grabbed and also refund of money he had taken from different people, enveloped his locality in wake of his party's ouster from power in the Assembly Election.
Sanjay Das (50), the deceased, represented ward no 18 of the South Dum Dum Municipality. He was also the Chairman-in-Council (Health & Sports) of the civic body and a close aide of another party councillor, Debraj Chakraborty, from Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation who recently moved the Calcutta High Court for relief in a case of corruption.
Family members of Sanjay found him hanging from the ceiling in a room in the morning. He was declared dead at Nagerbazar Hospital. The body was sent for post-mortem. The police suspect it was a case of suicide. No suicide note was found however. According to local residents, Sanjay was living in fear since posters against his misdeeds were pasted near his house.
Beleghata TMC MLA and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh alleged that ₹10 lakhs were sought from Sanjay in those posters also. TMC insiders however revealed that Sanjay looked depressed after Mr Chakraborty, who is the husband of singer turned former TMC MLA Aditi Munshi, came under the radar of police and the Enforcement Directorate arrested party heavyweight and former minister Sujit Bose in the municipal recruitment scam.
