KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari asserted on Monday that the trend of stone-pelting needs to disappear from the streets of Kolkata and the state like Jammu and Kashmir. He also declared that attacks on the police would not be tolerated under the BJP-rule.

Mr Adhikari made the remarks after meeting the cops and central forces personnel at the office of deputy commissioner of police (south east) in Park Circus a day after they were injured in stone-pelting in a violence mob attack in the area during a protest against the eviction by bulldozer and ban on Namaz on the roads.

The CM said, “Anyone can express their grievance and complaints in a logical manner to the police. That's normal in democracy. But sudden mobilisation of a group of people and shouting religious slogans is not welcome. Stone-pelting has stopped in Srinagar after the abrogation of Article 370.”

He added, “It needs to be stopped very much in Kolkata and Bengal also. But a habit continued here with a perception that the police will not do anything. Now fear has disappeared among the cops. It has become a past for the home minister to see from the AC-room assault on the cops.”

The CM pointed out, “This is my last warning to troublemakers. No vandalism or anti-nationalism will be tolerated here. The police have been given a free hand. No one will be allowed to raise hands on them. If anyone dares, I will be the worst home minister in that case.” Mr Adhikari also called the agitation a ‘planned one’ referring to a social media post hours before its occurrence.
