Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Monday that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) would have a new board by December 7 this year. He shared the plan during his maiden visit to the KMC on Monday.

According to Mr Adhikari, the KMC, which has been under operation by an administrator Smita Pandey, who is also the municipal commissioner, after Kolkata Port Trinamul Congress MLA Firhad Hakim stepped down as Mayor in wake of BJP forming the government, will go to civic polls within a stipulated time of six months.

He said, “There was an impasse in the KMC after the Mayor’s resignation. The state government gave three days’ time to constitute a new board. We wanted those, who were in power because of having a majority, to form the new board. But if they can not decide the next Mayor, what can the state government do?"

Mr Adhikari added, “Since they could not form the board, the government dissolved it and appointed an administrator. Elections will be conducted by the first week of December. The civic body will be handed over to elected representatives. KMC services are like emergency services.”

The CM was accompanied by state municipal affairs minister Agnimitra Paul, state finance minister Swapan Dasgupta and state industries minister Tapas Roy among others. He was seen interacting with Mr Hakim and others from the TMC which formed the civic board by winning 137 wards among 144 in 2021.
