Mumbai: A suspected Covid patient’s death in Thane district has taken the total death toll in Maharashtra to four. All four patients had fatal comorbidities, said doctors.

A 21-year-old Covid-19 patient with severe diabetes died due to comorbidities at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane. He was admitted for treatment at the hospital on May 22 and had tested positive for Covid-19, said Dr Aniruddh Malgaonkar, the hospital dean.

“The deceased had been admitted due to diabetes-related complications and his Covid-19 test came out positive on Friday night,” he added.

The Thane Municipal Corporation held a high-level review meeting to assess preparedness. “A sufficient stock of medicines has been maintained at all health centres and Covid-19 testing kits are readily available,” said Dr Chetna Nitil, Chief Medical Officer.

The TMC has reassured residents, emphasising that the situation remains under control and urged citizens not to panic.

All the four patients who died due to Covid-19 in Maharashtra had co-morbidities and mild symptoms. Among the three other deaths, one had nephrotic syndrome while another was undergoing treatment for cancer. The third patient had suffered from brain stroke.

In Maharashtra, Covid-19 cases have been reported in Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Nagpur so far.
