SMP Kolkata Posts Highest Cargo Growth Among Major Ports in April 2025

Registers 45.32% year on year rise in cargo throughput, handling nearly 6 MMT

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata recorded the highest growth among major Indian ports with a sharp rise in cargo and container volumes in April 2025.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has reported a remarkable 45.32% year-on-year growth in cargo throughput for April 2025. The port handled 5.967 million metric tonnes (MMT) in April 2025, up from 4.106 MMT in April 2024 — the highest growth among all major ports in the country during this period.

SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman stated, “This outstanding performance is a testament to the unwavering commitment and efficiency of the entire SMPK family.”

Dock-Wise Performance:

  • Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) handled 4.363 MMT in April 2025, compared to 2.993 MMT in April 2024 — a 45.77% increase.

  • Kolkata Dock System (KDS) handled 1.604 MMT, up from 1.113 MMT in April 2024 — a 44.12% growth.

This surge in cargo handling was driven by significant growth across various commodities.

Container Throughput:

In April 2025, SMPK handled a total of 75,716 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs):

  • KDS: 62,021 TEUs

  • HDC: 13,695 TEUs

This marks a 31.18% increase from 57,717 TEUs in April 2024 (KDS: 48,495; HDC: 9,222).

Commodity-Wise Highlights:

  • HDC registered growth in: POL products, LPG, other liquids, vegetable oil, coking coal, thermal coal, other coal, metallurgical coke, raw petroleum coke, manganese ore, other ores, fly ash, pulses, container tonnage, and TEUs.

  • KDS saw growth in: finished fertilizers, coking coal, other coal, pulses, metallurgical coke, foodgrains, container tonnage, and TEUs.
