Jammu: The security agencies of railways on Thursday carried out a massive joint special security and ticket-checking drive at railway station in Jammu in view of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and the surge in passenger traffic during the summer vacation, officials said.
"A joint special security and ticket-checking drive was conducted at Jammu Railway Station by the government railway police (GRP), railway protection force (RPF) and the commercial department's ticket-checking staff," a railway official said.
The exercise was aimed at strengthening security arrangements and ensuring passenger convenience at the station, which serves as a major gateway for lakhs of pilgrims and tourists arriving in Jammu and Kashmir during the annual pilgrimage, they said.
During the drive, GRP and RPF personnel carried out intensive checks of arriving and departing trains, railway platforms, waiting halls, foot-over bridges and parking areas. Special attention was paid to suspicious luggage and unattended items to prevent any security lapses, they said.
"Simultaneously, ticket-checking staff launched a campaign against passengers travelling without valid tickets, reservations or authorisation," the official said.
Railway officials also sensitised passengers about the importance of carrying valid travel documents and identity proofs during their journey.
Passengers were informed about emergency helpline numbers and advised to immediately report any suspicious person, object or activity to railway security personnel.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, said that passenger footfall at Jammu Railway Station witnesses a substantial increase during the summer holiday season and the Amarnath Yatra.
"Passenger convenience, along with safety and security, remains our top priority. This joint initiative by the GRP, RPF and ticket-checking staff is aimed at ensuring that every tourist and pilgrim enjoys a safe and hassle-free journey," he said.
Singhal urged passengers to travel only with valid tickets and make proper use of the facilities available at the station, adding that the Jammu Division remains committed to providing all possible assistance to travellers during the pilgrimage period.
Railway authorities said all necessary arrangements related to security, cleanliness and passenger amenities have been put in place and will continue throughout the Amarnath Yatra to ensure smooth travel for pilgrims and tourists.
The 40-day yatra will begin on July 3 from the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal.
