NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday warned against politicising judicial proceedings while hearing a criminal contempt plea against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her remarks on the teachers’ recruitment scam verdict.

A bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran admonished, “Please fight your political battles outside this court.”
The petition, filed by the public charitable trust Aatmdeep, alleges that the Chief Minister made objectionable statements undermining the judiciary’s authority after the Supreme Court upheld a ruling in April that invalidated nearly 25,000 appointments made by the West Bengal School Service Commission in 2016.
Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the petitioner, requested a deferral, noting that he had sought the Attorney General’s consent to initiate contempt proceedings. “Are you so sure you will get the consent? Don’t politicise before the court; fight your political battle elsewhere,” the CJI responded.
The bench has scheduled the next hearing in four weeks.
