Railways Clears ₹270-Cr Kavach Project For ECoR
The project will cover six sections — Baghuapal–Budhapank, Haridaspur–Paradeep, Khurda Road–Balangir, Naupada–Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road–Junagarh and Bobbili–Salur — across Odisha and adjoining regions.
NEW DELHI: Indian Railways has approved installation of the indigenous ‘Kavach’ safety system over 631 route kilometres (RKm) in the East Coast Railway zone at an estimated cost of ₹270 crore.
The project will cover six sections — Baghuapal–Budhapank, Haridaspur–Paradeep, Khurda Road–Balangir, Naupada–Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road–Junagarh and Bobbili–Salur — across Odisha and adjoining regions.
Officials said the move is aimed at enhancing safety in both passenger and freight operations and forms part of the Railways’ broader plan to expand Kavach coverage on high-density and critical routes.
The work will be implemented with an LTE-based communication backbone as part of the national rollout of the system.
Kavach is an indigenously developed automatic train protection system designed to prevent signal passing at danger (SPAD), over-speeding and collisions. It continuously monitors train movement and can automatically apply brakes when required.
Officials said the system would improve operational safety, ensure more reliable train movement during adverse weather such as fog, and enhance punctuality.
